January 1: A Day of Freedom

January 1: A Day of Freedom

The day Haiti became an independent country.

On January 1, 1804, Haiti became an independent country. It was the first republic led by Black people, and a day of great courage and hope.

Before that day, many people had been forced to work without freedom. They worked together, stayed brave and kept hoping for a better future.

Today Haitian families celebrate every January 1 with a special soup, with family and neighbors, and with pride in their history.

Courage can mean standing together, helping each other and never giving up hope.
