Flag Day: Blue and Red Together

Flag Day: Blue and Red Together

On May 18, Haitian families celebrate the day the flag was born.

Every year on May 18, Haiti celebrates Flag Day. Children wear red and blue, join parades and remember the day the Haitian flag was created in 1803.

The story says that Jean-Jacques Dessalines took a flag with three stripes and removed the white one. His goddaughter, Catherine Flon, sewed the blue and red stripes together.

Today the flag has a blue stripe on top and a red stripe below, with a white square in the middle. Inside the square, a palm tree stands tall above the words L’Union fait la force: together we are strong.

Blue and red side by side remind us that people are stronger when they stand together.
